The Best Technology for Dog Products: How I Keep Up with Beau and Brandy (and Their Shenanigans) – Part 1

Image of Beau sitting near an invisible fence

As a dog parent to Beau and Brandy, I’ve learned that technology is my best friend when it comes to keeping up with these two and their unpredictable antics. With Beau’s guard dog instincts (except when he is sleeping) to bark at potential danger and Brandy’s knack for blending into scenery, not to mention their very specific drinking habits (thanks to the great puppy water bowl debacle of 2020), I’ve had to incorporate the best tech out there to keep life with them running smoothly. From AirTags to no-spill bowls, here’s how I manage life with my dynamic duo, and why these products can make your dog-parenting journey a little easier, too.

1. AirTags: Tracking Beau and Brandy’s Escapades

Let’s start with AirTags. We track our cars, kids, phones and luggage. Why wouldn’t you keep tags on your beloved pets? With AirTags securely attached to their collars in special covers (Brandy’s is pink and Beau’s is blue), I can track their movements in real-time through the Find My app on my iPhone.

If Beau decides to take an unannounced adventure or when Brandy goes on a field trip while at doggie daycare, I know exactly where they are at all times. The AirTags help me locate them quickly—saving me from more than a few mini heart attacks!

2. Invisible Fence: Keeping the Adventurers in Check

Speaking of keeping them close, the invisible fence is my go-to for managing their outdoor activities. The invisible fence gives both dogs the freedom to explore the yard without me worrying they’ll wander off or chase a varmint off the property.

The fence can be unnerving to get used to since there is no barrier to keep them in and other varmints out. I am prone to irritation at people for not having a fence. I still check the perimeter before I let them outside. Thank goodness for lightup colors so I can better see them when letting them outside at night. The invisible fence is an absolute lifesaver (literally) when it comes to outdoor playtime, especially with two dogs who have their own agendas.

3. No-Bark Collar: Because Beau Thinks He’s a Neighborhood Watchdog

When it comes to barking, Beau seems to think he’s the self-appointed protector of the entire neighborhood. Enter the no-bark collar, a device that gives him a little nudge to stop the symphony of barking at every squirrel, leaf, and passerby.

The collar is gentle but effective—it vibrates or emits a light sound whenever Beau starts his bark fest. Thankfully, it’s helped Beau realize that not every car or pedestrian needs his personal commentary. Now, my ears (and the neighbors) get a break from his non-stop announcements.

4. Treat-Dispensing Pet Cameras: Keeping an Eye on Beau and Brandy When I’m Out

When I’m not home, the Furbo treat-dispensing camera helps me keep an eye on Beau and Brandy. I can watch them from my phone, talk to them, and even toss them a treat when they’re being good. Beau loves hearing my voice through the camera—it’s like he thinks I’ve magically appeared to give him snacks. Brandy is just happy that treats fall from the sky.

The two-way audio feature also helps calm them down when I’m away. If Beau starts to bark or Brandy gets anxious, I can check in on them and remind them they’re not alone, all while sneaking them a treat.

5. Nail Grinders: Spa Day for Paws

If your dog hates nail trimming as much as Beau and Brandy, nail grinders are your best friend. I use a Dremel nail grinder, which is far less traumatic than the clippers. Beau’s convinced I’m performing some kind of cruel experiment when I bring out the clippers, but with the grinder, he stays calm and collected. I cannot lie, Brandy doesn’t like any of it. Thank goodness she’s only 40lbs.

The grinder slowly files down their nails, making it safer and more comfortable for both of them. Plus, I’m not at risk of cutting too far and causing a meltdown (or bleeding). I’m talking about me!

6. No-Spill Water Bowl: Beau’s Hydration Station

Now, here’s where things get interesting. Brandy won’t go near a water fountain since she’s been traumatized by the puppy water bowl debacle of 2020. Long story short, she had a very unpleasant experience with a water bowl as a puppy and has since sworn off anything with running water. Beau, on the other hand, would use a fountain, but he’s the sloppiest drinker on the planet. He turns every drink of water into a mini tsunami.

That’s why we stick with a no-spill water bowl. It keeps Beau from soaking the entire kitchen floor, and it’s simple enough for Brandy to feel safe drinking from it. It’s a win-win, really—no spills, no drama.

7. Automatic Feeders: Great for Some, But Not for Us

While automatic feeders are a fantastic idea, we don’t use them because we feed Beau and Brandy fresh meals from The Farmer’s Dog. Their fresh food requires a little more hands-on preparation, and honestly, the dogs love the attention that comes with mealtime. However, if you’re feeding kibble or need something to automate feeding times, automatic feeders are a great way to ensure your pups get their meals on time, even when you’re not home.

8. Pet Stain Remover Vacuum: Because Dirty Feet Happen

Beau and Brandy are notorious for running into the house with muddy paws, especially after they’ve had a blast in the yard. While they don’t have too many accidents in the house, we use the pet stain remover vacuum for cleaning up after their dirty feet (and for the occasional oops moment). The Bissell SpotClean works wonders for pulling out dirt, mud, and any lingering messes from their paws. It’s a quick, easy solution to keep the carpets looking fresh—and the house from smelling like wet dog!

9. Pet Apps: Managing Beau and Brandy’s Busy Lives

Managing two dogs is no small feat, so I rely on pet apps like PawTrack to monitor their activity and health. I also use BarkHappy to find dog-friendly parks and restaurants in our area. With these apps, I can keep track of their vet appointments, daily routines, and even find new spots for them to enjoy.

The Tech That Keeps Beau, Brandy, and Me Happy

Between the AirTags, the invisible fence, the no-spill water bowl, and all the other tech I’ve added to our lives, managing Beau and Brandy has become a lot more manageable. From curbing Beau’s barking to keeping Brandy from hiding in her secret spots, technology has made life with these two much smoother.

In the end, the right tech can make life with your dogs easier, more fun, and a whole lot less stressful. And when you’re dealing with a barker like Beau and a hider like Brandy, every little bit helps! Stay tuned for Part 2, where we dive even deeper into the tech that keeps my pups (and me) sane!
